1861 United States Army Enlistment Requirements

“Revised Regulations for the Army of the United States, 1861, Article XL, state that to enlist you must be: 

A person of sound mind,

Between the ages of eighteen and thirty five (under twenty one requires consent of parent or guardian)

At least five feet, three inches tall

Effective, able-bodied, sober, free from disease

Of good character and habits

In possession of a competent knowledge of the English language

Without a wife or child-this applies only in times of peace”

The Civil War United States Army Oath of Enlistment

The Articles of War, Article 10

I, (Name) do solemnly swear or affirm (as the case may be) that I will bear true allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever, and observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the rules and articles for the government of the armies of the United States.

The Oath of Enlistment may be administered by any commissioned officer of the army. It is to be taken within six days of the enlistment.
